Last night’s show was soooooooooooooooo crazy! few words can describe what happened!
First of all, this band Generation along their friend Bleak End at Bernie’s played and blew EVERYBODY’s minds! these guys are great and put on a show that is out of this world and is something like the gates of hell are opening up in front of you and there’s a party that you may or may not wanna be a part of. These guys are pure energy and have great theatrics.
Also, the great Three Brained Robot graced us with his presence as well. Who always brings his energy and showmanship, always with the flailing and the great sounds.
Then I played and closed the night with somber sounds.
Ultimately, it was a great night. Sold some tapes, my tapes and Nathan’s tapes, met some great new friends, played well, and got to be in my favorite venue in the world, The Water Heater.
My two favorite moments of the night:
1. While we were playing with one of those big parachutes from elementary gym class during the Three Brained Robot set, my friend Manfred from France yelled “I Love America!”
2. When I was done with my set and looked up, all of my favorite beloved people in the world were right in front of me. (minus my Boone friends of course)
We have a new artist! The Roanoke, VA group The Delta Function
The Delta Function consists of Emily and Marilyn who have been best friends and making music for a long long time. They make awesome cute twee folk music similar to Tegan And Sara, The Dodos, Beat Happening, and Belle And Sebastian. Look for news, releases, and shows from these wonderful musiciennes.
check out www.myspace.com/wolflikeindependence for some great songs!
Wow, now this IS old school. This is an old project of ours that played at The Water Heater once and then stopped. It was called Rochester Scrabble Club and it totally ruled. Probably the best twee post-folk band ever. Not really.
These are two of my best friends in the whole world. Becca on the snare there has since gone on to art school in Chicago to take the art world by storm, which I have no doubt whatsoever that she will. Eric on bass there now goes to George Mason and has a fledgling music project that is for now called Bearded Sister.
Then there’s me there. oh jeez.
But ultimately, I’d really love to re-record these songs and make a small run on Personal Records. Because they sure were awesome, at least I get all nostalgic when I hear them. Hmmmmm
We are very excited to announce the newest introduction to the Personal Records family! Nobles out of Roanoke, VA are a great group of young dudes making some original sounds. I’d bill them as something between American Football and Wavves/Best Coast. They’ll tell you it’s somewhere between Do Make Say Think and Mogwai to Interpol and Bloc Party. All you need to know is that these guys do it well and have fun with it. Lots of energy and one of the best young drummers I’ve ever seen. Watch out for these guys.
We’re also excited to have our first traditional “band” on the label. Every other artist being one or two people predominately. We’re talking right now about releasing a nice looking demo for these guys and more and more in the future.
Check these guys out at www.myspace.com/noblesbandva or at a local Roanoke, VA show near you.
Nobles started in the late spring of 2010, with Conner, Daniel, and Riley fooling around on their most familiar instruments in Conner’s basement. After writing several songs and developing somewhat of a decent sound, they brought Ryan in on keyboard to try and bring more melody and sound into the band. Shortly after, they recorded their first 3-track demo, although they did not have a band name yet, and distributed it to friends and whoever wanted one. After writing more songs and finally settling on the band name ’Nobles’, they played their first show at The Water Heater in early summer 2010. They then went on a short summer hiatus for about a month while several members were on vacation, and returned in August to continue their music. Andy then joined the band to fill out the sound on guitar, giving them more sound and ability to make more noise. They hope to start playing shows again and blowing peoples minds. For anyone who likes artists anywhere from Do Make Say Think and Mogwai to Interpol and Bloc Party, check out their music on www.myspace.com/noblesbandva
On October 19th at 7pm at The Water Heater in Roanoke, a great show is happening featuring great international talent and awesome local Personal Records artists. This show will be both heartwarming and out of this world.
What I am most excited about is my two favorite Roanoke acts, Nobles and The Delta Function, getting to play with CJ Boyd. CJ Boyd is important to me, as I played my very first show with him and got to learn the bearings of independent music through him.
CJ Boyd embodies the spirit of how all it takes to go somewhere with music is to be a genuine, compassionate and cool person who believes in their own music. This will be a great night, a great showcase of talent, and a big stepping stone in Nobles’ and The Delta Function’s young careers.
